S6 Global Sustainability - Beef Industry

Global Economic Activity

As part of the Global Sustainability topic for Stage 6 Geography, students explore sustainability, principles of ecologically sustainable development, challenges for achieving global sustainability, and evaluating and monitoring sustainability. Students undertake a case study of one economic activity.

This field trip provides students with an in-depth understanding of the global beef industry. It analyses the sustainability of beef production using the four pillars of sustainability-economic, social, cultural and environmental. The fieldwork outlines how beef farming can contribute to rural economies, the cultural significance of beef in certain regions, and the social benefits of cattle by-products. It also emphasises the substantial environmental challenges, particularly in terms of methane emissions and soil degradation, and addresses mitigation strategies.

This trip enables students to address some of the mandatory fieldwork requirements of the HSC course.
