S2 Buggin' Out
LIVING WORLD S2
An investigation into various ‘Minibeast” habitats around our centre, in search of the invertebrates that call them home. Using “real-world” sample collection equipment, students collect, identify and classify a range of insects and aquatic macroinvertebrates in a catch and release study. Students learn how the results of their study can be an important indicator of the overall health of an Ecosystem.
Learning experiences
- Using shaker mats, nets, pit traps and observation cubes to collect specimens.
- Dip-netting and how to use aquatic macroinvertebrates as an indicator of water quality.
- Bird Surveys/Relationships between birds, bugs, food chains and Ecosystem health.
- Use of binocular microscopes to observe features and identify specimens.
- Observation of high quality, preserved insect and arachnid specimens under microscopes.
- Wagon ride/Observation of different environments.
- Bug Hotel construction.
- "Make-a-Minibeast" - creation of model using synthetic materials or modelling clay and natural materials. Ride to observe pastures, crops and cattle.
